I t had been four days and I hadn’t heard from West. All day long, I’d stare at his number, debating on if I should call or text him. But I didn’t, only because of his girlfriend, and I thought maybe he was trying to work on them.

Turning on my side, I huffed. These past few days had been long, and I had been drowning in my feelings. No matter how much I told myself to get up and handle my responsibilities, I couldn’t make myself get up.

When I was good, I was great, but baby, when depression hit me, it damn near strangled me alive. It was one disease that I wouldn’t wish on no one.

My room was a mess, I needed to wash my clothes and I was pretty sure my son was tired of eating sandwiches and seeing his mommy with my hair all over my head, but damn. I couldn’t find the strength.

My bedroom door eased open, and my baby boy walked in. He walked over to the side of my bed and said, “Mommy, I want to go outside.”

Marquez knew I hated letting him play outside our apartments. He damn sure wasn’t going to go outside now after someone was shooting. I didn’t know if those bullets were meant for me, but no one could tell me that they weren’t.

“Marquez baby, mama will take you to the best park ever as soon as I get my car back.”

He stomped his foot, poked his lip out, and lowered his head. Reaching out, I rubbed the top of his head. “Baby, don’t be mad at mama, you know I don’t make any promises that I don’t keep. Just go in there and watch tv and I will get up and put you a pop tart in the oven. Okay.”

Marquez’s head shot up and he was now smiling. He kissed me on the hand and ran out of my room.

Shaking my head, I rolled over on my back and looked up at the ceiling. Forcing myself out of the bed, I dug my finger in the middle of my head and fought through my nappy ass hair to scratch my itching scalp.

Sluggishly, I made my way out of the bedroom, only stopping to dig my shorts out of my ass. Once I reached the living room, I looked around and knew I needed to do better. My shit was a mess and I was dreading looking at the dishes that I allowed to pile up in the kitchen sink.

“Marquez, here!” I shouted for him to come and get the pop tart.

The sound of my phone ringing caused me to place the pop tart on the dinner table.

“Go get your pop tart off the table, baby,” I told Marquez as I zoomed passed him to grab my phone.

I hoped it wasn’t my aunt calling to remind me of her needing me to take care of her mom, my grandma, because I wasn’t trying to hear it.

Pushing the door to my room open, I grabbed my phone off the bed.
